A tree-like plant native to the tropics of the Western hemisphere, the unripe fruit of which is “milked” for the enzymes papain and chymopapain, which have been prescribed for those with difficulties in digesting protein. Papain and chymopapain are used to lyse post-surgical blood clots and ruptured vertebral disks, and are used commercially as meat tenderisers.
