Since 1996 some family-friendly provisions were mandated throughout all industry awards, with unpaid parental and personal carer's leave as a minimum.
In the years just prior to the 1994 Parental Leave Test Case a range of family-friendly provisions were introduced into retail awards and agreements, including extended unpaid maternity leave, limited paid family and carer's leave, paid prenatal leave (usually as part of paid sick leave), and the right to return to work part-time after maternity leave (personal communication from Therese Bryant, Shop, Distributive and Allied Employees Association).
But campaigners say Carer's Leave would allow time for planned events such as hospital visits.
It also offers Carer's Leave - typically five days a year - decided by managers on a discretionary basis.
