carbonic anhydrase /car·bon·ic an·hy·drase/ (an-hi´-drās) an enzyme that catalyzes the decomposition of carbonic acid into carbon dioxide and water, facilitating the transfer of carbon dioxide from tissues to blood and from blood to alveolar air.
carbonic anhydrase [anhī′drās] a zinc-containing enzyme in red blood cells that assists in the hydration of carbon dioxide to carbonic acid in the red blood cell so that it can be transported from the tissue cell to the lungs. Also called carbonate dehydratase. anhydrase [an-hi´drās] an enzyme that catalyzes the removal of water from a compound. carbonic anhydrase an enzyme that catalyzes the decomposition of carbonic acid into carbon dioxide and water, facilitating transfer of carbon dioxide from tissues to blood and from blood to alveolar air.
carbonic anhydrase (kärbon´ik anhī´drās´), n an enzyme that plays a role in transferring carbon dioxide from tissue cells to the lungs by turning carbon dioxide into carbonic acid in red blood cells. Also called
carbonate dehydratase. carbonic anhydrase an enzyme which catalyzes the reversible conversion of carbon dioxide to bicarbonate ions and thus facilitates the transport and elimination of carbon dioxide from tissues. The enzyme is also important in making adequate calcium available for the deposition of shells on birds' eggs. carbonic anhydrase inhibitor diuretics diuretics such as acetazolamide exert their effect on tubular resorption in the kidney by inhibiting carbonic anhydrase. These compounds are used preferentially for the treatment of chronic glaucoma because the formation of aqueous humor is highly dependent on carbonic anhydrase. Want to thank TFD for its existence?
