| Under Irwin's guidance, the zoo has established captive breeding programs of many endangered species in order to prevent the animals from becoming extinct. Yet as environmental pressures, diseases, and non-native predators decimated the alala population, the most valiant efforts of captive breeding and release programs were insufficient to halt its slow extinction. In 1995 the Roodes built an advanced veterinary facility and took on captive breeding of endangered species such as the African wild dog, black-footed cat, blue crane and ground hornbill. |
