He and his colleagues started investigating this mystery by searching cell surfaces in live, cultured slices of rat hippocampus for receptors that respond to marijuana and a few other similar drugs, called cannabinoids. Certain cannabinoids inhibited several genes that are critical for allowing the tumors to form new blood vessels for themselves (which they must do in order to grow beyond a small size).
