CALB2

A gene on chromosome 16q22.2 that encodes a calcium-binding protein of the troponin C superfamily, popularly termed calretinin, which contains 6 active calcium-binding domains and plays a role in various cell functions—e.g., message targeting, intracellular calcium buffering, modulating neuronal excitability.

Molecular pathology
CALB2 is used as a marker of Hirschsprung disease and some cancers.

calretinin

(kal-ret′ĭn-ĭn)
A calcium-binding protein used in immunohistochemical studies to identify the presence of neuronal cells or several specific tumors, e.g., malignant mesotheliomas.
