calorie restriction

, caloric restriction
Limiting the consumption of food to less than what an organism would eat if given free access to nutrients. In laboratory animals, esp. mice and rodents, limiting the quantity of food ingested, while maintaining adequate levels of essential nutrients, prolongs life. Calorie restriction in humans decreases body mass index, improves serum lipid levels, and lowers blood pressure (with other potentially beneficial effects), but its effect on longevity is speculative.

In the latest study, 27 men followed a calorie restricted diet for 12 weeks, while the other study looked at short-term effects of protein on hunger/appetite in 13 men fed controlled meals on four separate days.
While an earlier published rodent study showed that ultra-high doses of resveratrol (1565 milligram human dose - equivalent to 1500 bottles of wine or many dietary supplement capsules) successfully overcame the adverse effects of a high-fat diet, the lowest dose that genetically mimics a calorie restricted diet was, until now, undetermined.
Editor's note: Getting adequate sleep may be beneficial when trying to follow a low-calorie or calorie restricted diet.
The project is focused on identifying a robust panel of genes in adipose tissue (fat) that are regulated by a calorie restricted diet.
The Company's research found that variations within the Perilipin genes are associated with resistance to body weight and fat loss in overweight study subjects who were provided a calorie restricted diet.
The findings also revealed that people following the Mediterranean diet also showed a greater adherence to the calorie restricted diet, an increase in physical activity and a greater decrease in abdominal fat.
In a head-to-head comparison, a unique patent-applied-for matrix of molecules (resveratrol, quercetin, IP6 rice bran) as provided in Longevinex(R) activated 9-fold more longevity genes (1711) than plain resveratrol (225 genes) or a calorie restricted diet (198 genes) at a dose of resveratrol 17-320 times lower than prior studies.
In a study presented at the European Congress on Obesity, scientists found that overweight or obese people who regularly used the equipment in combination with a calorie restricted diet were more successful at long-term weight loss and shedding the fat around their abdominal organs than those who combined dieting with a more conventional fitness routine.
Resveratrol, a molecule found in red wine, has been touted as a molecular mimic of a calorie restricted diet, an intervention that has been shown to nearly double the lifespan of all forms of life when caloric intake is cut in half.
Mouse longevity studies take about 3-4 years and cost more than a million dollars, so more economical gene array studies are performed and compared against a calorie restricted diet, which is a known intervention that prolongs life in all life forms.
Only the nutriceutical matrix, and not resveratrol or a long-term calorie restricted diet, upregulated the Foxo1 gene which enters the cell nucleus and promotes the expression of key longevity genes.
In a study of obese patients on a calorie restricted diet, those with one perilipin genetic pattern were resistant to weight loss over a 12 month period.
