French bacteriologist. With Camille Guérin he developed (c. 1921) the Bacillus Calmette-Guérin vaccine for immunization against tuberculosis.

Calmette was so pleased to receive his Christmas bonus check on time from his East Coast employer, that he presented Santa with a little stuffed Felix the Cat doll.
