calcifediol /cal·cif·e·di·ol/ (kal″sif-ĕ-di´ol) see 25-hydroxycholecalciferol. calcifediol [kal′sifē′dē·ol] a major transport form of vitamin D. indication It is prescribed in the treatment of metabolic bone disease associated with chronic renal failure. contraindications Hypercalcemia, vitamin D toxicity, malabsorption syndrome, decreased renal function, or known hypersensitivity to this drug prohibits its use. adverse effects Among the most serious adverse effects are renal toxicity and those reactions associated with hypercalcemia, such as soft tissue calcification and GI and central nervous system disturbances. calcifediol nonproprietary name for 25-hydroxycholecalciferol, used as a calcium regulator in the treatment and management of metabolic bone disease or hypocalcemia associated with chronic renal failure.
