On Thursday, December 1, the American Petroleum Institutes (API) new diesel engine oil standards, API CK-4 and FA-4, will begin appearing in the marketplace on licensed products and marketing materials.
Earlier this year, APIs Lubricants Group approved the new API CK-4 and FA-4 specifications to address the varying needs of engine technologies aging, new, and in use, both on- and off-highway and to help diesel engine manufacturers meet more stringent emissions requirements.
December 1 is an industry milestone as it marks the first day new API CK-4 and FA-4 engine oils can be marketed and sold on retail shelves or in bulk, said Kevin Ferrick, Senior Manager of APIs Engine Oil Licensing and Certification System (EOLCS).
API CK-4 oils will replace current API CJ-4 engine oils and will be backward compatible with most applications where engine manufacturers currently recommend CJ-4.
Premiering in December, API Service Categories CK-4 and FA-4 succeed Service Category CJ-4 oils that have been widely recommended among on- and off-highway diesel engine manufacturers over the past decade.
Compared to CJ-4 products, which debuted just before major, regulation-driven changes took hold for on- and off-highway power and exhaust treatment, CK-4 oils will exhibit improvements in three key areas for engines operating in normal to peak cycles: oxidation stability, owing to newer engines' tendencies to operate at up to 10[degrees]C higher than legacy heavy-duty power; aeration control to curtail entrainment of air in lubricants; and, shear stability, protecting lubricants from being sheared out of grade--i.
We have been working on CK-4 and FA-4 oils for more than five years, keeping in mind that meeting the new specifications was simply a starting point for Rotella," says Shell Lubricants Global Heavy-Duty Diesel Engine Oil Brand Marketing Manager Chris Guerrero.
The new Rubia Optima engine oils allow TOTAL to fully meet and even surpass the new CK-4 and FA-4 specifications.
Total has worked together with major Heavy-Duty Original Equipment Manufacturers (OEMs) to develop the new Rubia Optima oils with performances that surpass CK-4 oils including outstanding oxidation control, shear stability and oil aeration control.
The American Petroleum Institute (API) announced that it has approved two new diesel engine oil standards, API Service Categories CK-4 and FA-4.
API CK-4 and FA-4 will first appear in the API Service Symbol Donut on December 1, 2016.
Most truck manufacturers recommending API-licensed CJ-4 engine oils will likely recommend truck owners start using licensed API CK-4 oils as soon as they are available.
