A gene on chromosome 2p21 that encodes a protein of the suppressor of cytokine-signalling (SOCS)—i.e., STAT-induced STAT inhibitor (SSI)—protein family, which are cytokine-inducible negative regulators of cytokine signalling. SOCS5’s specific function is unknown.
