CD4 cell, CD4+ cell, a major classification of T lymphocytes, referring to those that carry the CD4 antigen; most are helper cells. Also called CD4 T lymphocytes. Costs among the sickest patients (those with the lowest CD4 cell counts) come to nearly triple those among individuals whose disease is least advanced. Patients must be three-class experienced with at least two PI-based regimens, and have a CD4 cell count of equal or less than 200 cells/mm3. The problem with CD4 cell changes as a surrogate marker was that CD4 cell count was a direct marker of a person's immune status, but only an indirect marker of anti-HIV drug activity (it rose when HIV levels fell). |
