bullous pemphigoid

bullous pemphigoid
n.
A chronic generally benign skin disease, usually of old age, characterized by subepidermal blisters that cause detachment of the epidermis but that tend to heal without scarring.

bullous pemphigoid
Etymology: L, bulla, bubble; Gk, pemphix, bubble, eidos, form
a rare, relatively benign subepidermal autoimmune blistering disease of the elderly. It is of unknown origin.

pertaining to or characterized by bullae.

bullous emphysema
pulmonary emphysema characterized by the presence of subpleural and interlobular bullae.
bullous epidermolysis
see epidermolysis bullosa.
bullous pemphigoid
see bullous pemphigoid.

pemphigoid
1. resembling pemphigus.
2. a group of skin disorders similar to but clearly distinguishable from pemphigus.

bullous pemphigoid
an autoimmune disease of skin and oral mucosa with vesicles, bullae and ulcerations; occurs rarely in dogs and humans.
cicatricial pemphigoid
a form that involves the oral and ocular mucosa.

bullous pemphigoid
Dermatology A disease characterized by tense blister–bullae formation on mucocutaneous surfaces, caused by circulating antibodies–usually IgG to the basement membrane of stratified epithelium Clinical BP may be chronic and mild without affecting the general health Management Topical corticosteroids–may require high doses of systemic cortisone. Cf Pemphigus vulgaris.
