A marauding amphibian, Bufo marinus was introduced to Australia in 1935 from Central and South America in an attempt to control beetles ravaging sugar cane fields in the tropical northeast.
Bufo marinus, but Johnny Crapaud in Grenadian stewpots, the giant toad of the tropics brought from Africa by a French plantation master --his name has not come down to us-- to free his sugarcane of field mice.
But while Bufo marinus can only threaten a fraction of Australia's biodiversity, invasive plants could transform the whole environment of the Top End, potentially damaging our tourism and agricultural industries.
