brain natriuretic peptide (BNP)

a hormone, originally isolated from porcine brain tissue, having biological effects similar to those of atrial natriuretic peptide and stored mainly in the myocardium of the cardiac ventricles. Blood levels of BNP are elevated in hypervolemic states, such as congestive heart failure and hypertension.

An atrial natriuretic peptide-like brain peptide produced predominantly in the cerebral ventricles, which induces diuresis and is secreted in response to fluid overload, as occurs in congestive heart failure.
