Vicia /Vic·ia/ (vish´e-ah) a genus of herbs, including V. fa´ba (V. fa´va), the fava or broad bean, whose beans or pollen contain a component capable of causing favism in susceptible persons.
Vicia
plant genus of the legume family Fabaceae; contains fodder plants that can be poisonous in a variety of ways. Called also vetch.

Vicia angustifolia
contains the lathyrogenic agent β-cyano-l-alanine; also causes cyanide poisoning manifested by incoordination, recumbency, tremor, convulsions.
Vicia benghalensis
unidentified toxin causes diarrhea, dermatitis, dyspnea and widespread eosinophilic granulomas; called also popany vetch.
Vicia dasycarpa
unidentified toxin causes muscle wasting, jaundice, alopecia, diarrhea, pruritus and widespread eosinophilic granulomas. Called also woolly pod vetch.
Vicia faba
reports of illness are confined to humans and are characterized by a toxic hepatitis. Called also broad bean.
Vicia nigricans
reported to cause liver damage and photosensitization in horses.
Vicia sativa
contains a cyanogenetic glycoside and also causes liver damage and photosensitization.
Vicia villosa
reported to cause a syndrome of dermatitis, conjunctivitis and diarrhea, with widespread eosinophilic granulomas in cattle. Called also hairy vetch.
