bleomycin [ble″o-mi´sin] an antitumor antibiotic obtained from cultures of Streptomyces verticellus. It binds to DNA and causes single-strand breaks and double-strand scissions, impairing DNA synthesis and inhibiting RNA and protein synthesis. Administered by injection as the sulfate salt to treat lymphomas, soft tissue sarcomas, and cancers of the head and neck, cervix, skin, testes, lung, and other organs.
bleomycin a polypeptide antibiotic mixture having antineoplastic properties, obtained from cultures of Streptomyces verticellus. Evidence indicates that bleomycin inhibits cell division, thymidine incorporation into DNA, and DNA synthesis. Has been used in dogs and cats in the treatment of squamous cell carcinoma, but side-effects, including pneumonia or pulmonary scarring, limit its use.

used to treat lymphomas, Hodgkin's disease, Kaposi sarcoma, testicular CA, and other germ cell tumors Mechanism of action Induction of single- and double-stranded breaks in DNA Adverse effects Fever, stomatitis, skin lesions, BM suppression,
