In 2012, we analyzed urine specimens for free and total (conjugated plus free) concentrations of nine compounds: BPA, butyl paraben, ethyl paraben, methyl paraben, propyl paraben, benzophenone-3, triclosan, 2,4-dichlorophenol, and 2,5-dichlorophenol.
To examine potential contamination of specimens, we also compared the distributions of free phenol and paraben concentrations as a percentage of the total concentration for the five compounds with sufficient detection: BPA, butyl paraben, methyl paraben, propyl paraben, and benzophenone-3.
Caption: Benzophenone-3 is the most common allergy-causing UV filter.
Detection frequencies in amniotic fluid were much lower: Only benzophenone-3 and propylparaben were detectable in at least half of the samples (61% and 58%, respectively).
However, benzophenone-3 and butylparaben concentrations were higher in amniotic fluid than in the corresponding urine sample for one woman with oligohydramnios (urine:amniotic fluid ratios of 0.

Three phenols, BPA, benzophenone-3, and triclosan, were each above the LOD in at least 75% of study participants and were evaluated as single compounds in our analysis.
Total parabens, BPA, triclosan, benzophenone-3, and total phthalates were not significantly associated with age of menarche, either before or after adjustment for BMI and race/ethnicity (Table 4).
The UV screen benzophenone-3 (Bp-3) and its metabolite 2,4-dihydroxybenzophenone have been detected in human urine from 4 hr after application of commercially available sunscreen products to the skin (7,10).
