aphtha /aph·tha/ (af´thah) pl. aph´thae [L.] (usually plural) small ulcers, especially the whitish or reddish spots in the mouth characteristic of aphthous stomatitis. Bednar's aphthae symmetric excoriation of the posterior hard palate in infants. contagious aphthae foot-and-mouth disease.
Bednar's aphthae [bed′närz] Etymology: Alois Bednar, Austrian pediatrician, 1816-1888 the small, yellowish, slightly elevated ulcerated patches that occur on the posterior portion of the hard palate of infants who place infected objects in their mouths.
