Bainbridge reflex Etymology: Francis A. Bainbridge, English physiologist, 1874-1921 a cardiac reflex in which stimulation of stretch receptors in the wall of the left atrium causes an increased pulse rate. It may be triggered by the infusion of large amounts of IV fluids or by backflow of blood in congestive heart failure. Bainbridge reflex a reflex of uncertain validity that states that the intravenous injection of fluid or blood, or the experimental dilatation of the right atrium, causes tachycardia. An alternative statement says that these manipulations cause bradycardia. Called also McDowall reflex. How to thank TFD for its existence?
