resuscitator /re·sus·ci·ta·tor/ (-sus´ĭ-ta″tor) an apparatus for initiating respiration in persons whose breathing has stopped.

n.
One that resuscitates, as an apparatus that forces oxygen or a mixture of oxygen and carbon dioxide into the lungs of a person who has undergone partial asphyxiation.

resuscitator
[risus′itā′tər]
an apparatus for pumping air into the lungs. It consists of a mask snugly applied over the mouth and nose, a reservoir for air, and a manually or electrically powered pump. Often oxygen may be added to the air in the reservoir. See also Ambu bag, bag-valve-mask resuscitator.
