Bacteroides /Bac·te·roi·des/ (bak?ter-oi´dez) a genus of gram-negative, anaerobic, rod-shaped bacteria, which are normal inhabitants of the oral, respiratory, intestinal, and urogenital cavities of humans and animals; some species can cause potentially fatal abscesses and bacteremias.
