brain natriuretic peptide (BNP), a hormone, originally isolated from porcine brain tissue, having biologic effects similar to those of atrial natriuretic peptide and stored mainly in the myocardium of the cardiac ventricles. Blood levels of BNP are elevated in hypervolemic states, such as congestive heart failure and hypertension.
