AZACSAzithromycin in Acute Coronary Syndrome. A trial which asked whether the evidence suggesting an association between Chlamydia pneumoniae infection and coronary artery disease was real, and, if so, would short-term treatment with the macrolide antibiotic azithromycin reduce recurrent ischaemic events in patients admitted for unstable angina or acute myocardial infarction.
Death, recurrent MI, recurrent ischaemia necessitating revascularisation.
Randomised, double-blind, placebo-controlled, multicentre; 1439 patients to receive azthromycin or placebo.
No association between Chlamydia pneumoniae infection and coronary artery disease (and thus, no benefit of azithromycin treatment).
