idiot /id·i·ot/ (id´e-it) obsolete, offensive name for a person with profound mental retardation.
idiot savant  a mentally retarded person with a particular mental faculty developed to an unusually high degree, as for mathematics, music, etc.

idiot savant (s-vänt)
n. pl. idiot savants
A mentally retarded person who exhibits genius in a highly specialized area, such as mathematics.

an individual with mental retardation who is nonetheless capable of performing certain unusual mental feats, primarily those involving music, puzzle solving, or manipulation of numbers.
