lizard [liz′ərd] Etymology: L, lacerta a scaly-skinned reptile with a long body and tail and two pairs of legs. The large Gila monster of Arizona, New Mexico, and Utah and the beaded lizard of Mexico are the only North American lizards known to be venomous. The symptoms of their bites and the recommended treatment are similar to those of the bites from poisonous snakes, except that antivenin is not available. lizard member of the suborder Lacertilia.
