gap (gap) an unoccupied interval in time; an opening or hiatus.
air-bone gap  the lag between the audiographic curves for air- and bone-conducted stimuli, as an indication of loss of bone conduction of the ear.
anion gap  the concentration of plasma anions not routinely measured by laboratory screening, accounting for the difference between the measured anions and cations.
auscultatory gap  a period in which sound is not heard in the auscultatory method of sphygmomanometry.

auscultatory gap
n.
In measuring blood pressure by the auscultatory method, the period during which sounds indicating true systolic pressure fade away and reappear at a lower pressure point.

auscultatory gap,
time in which sound is not heard in the auscultatory method of measuring blood pressure with a sphygmomanometer, occurring particularly in hypertension and in aortic stenosis.

auscultatory gap (ôskul´ttōrē),
n a pause that occurs during the auscultatory method of measuring blood pressure. Noted as the silent period that is present when the sound of systolic pressure diminishes and returns at a lower pressure point. Many errors in recording low blood pressure are attributed to the auscultatory gap.
