central auditory processing disorder (CAPD),
difficulty in processing and interpreting auditory stimuli in the absence of a peripheral hearing loss, usually resulting from a problem in the brainstem or cerebral cortex. Children with CAPD often have difficulty with written language tasks and may exhibit other learning disabilities as well.

Central auditory processing disorders (CAPD) often result in both receptive and expressive language disorders, and children with language impairments exhibit a five times greater chance of developing reading problems (Gillon, 2001).
According to Merzenich, struggling readers often have an auditory processing disorder that makes it hard for them to distinguish among phonemes, the basic building blocks of language; the distinct sounds fly by so fast in speech, some kids can't match them up with the letters they see on a page.
