Central auditory processing disorders (CAPD) often result in both receptive and expressive language disorders, and children with language impairments exhibit a five times greater chance of developing reading problems (Gillon, 2001). According to Merzenich, struggling readers often have an auditory processing disorder that makes it hard for them to distinguish among phonemes, the basic building blocks of language; the distinct sounds fly by so fast in speech, some kids can't match them up with the letters they see on a page. |
