Arteriole The smallest type of artery. Mentioned in: Raynaud's Disease arteriole [ärtir′ē·ōl] Etymology: L, arteriola, little artery the smallest of the arteries. Blood flowing from the heart is pumped through the arteries, to the arterioles, to the capillaries, into the veins, and returned to the heart. The muscular walls of the arterioles constrict and dilate in response to both local factors and neurochemical stimuli; thus, arterioles play a significant role in peripheral vascular resistance and in regulation of blood pressure. Also called arteriola. See also artery. arteriolar, adj. arteriole (ärtir´ēōl), n a smaller arterial branch off an artery and connecting to a capillary. arteriole a minute arterial branch. afferent arteriole enters the glomerulus at the vascular pole and divides into capillaries which subsequently merge to form efferent arterioles. efferent arteriole derived from the glomerular capillaries in the renal glomeruli, these arterioles exit from the glomerulus at its vascular pole. straight arteriole see arteriola rectae renis. arteriole Anatomy A teeny weeny artery that connects arteries with capillaries How to thank TFD for its existence? The possible mechanisms are intracellular perturbation of calcium metabolism at end arterioles and effects on the renin--angiotensin system (Sharp et al.
