hydrometer /hy·drom·e·ter/ (hi-drom´ĕ-ter) an instrument for determining the specific gravity of a fluid.

An instrument used to determine specific gravity, especially a sealed graduated tube, weighted at one end, that sinks in a fluid to a depth indicating the fluid's specific gravity. Also called gravimeter.

hydrometer

Etymology: Gk, hydor + metron, measure
a device that determines the specific gravity or density of a liquid by a comparison of its weight with that of an equal volume of water. A calibrated hollow glass device is placed in the liquid being examined, and the depth to which the device settles in the liquid is noted.
