Determining intraocular pressure by measuring the force necessary to flatten the corneal surface.

applanation tonometry

A standard method of measuring the pressure of the fluids within the eye by determining the force necessary to flatten a standard area of the CORNEA. Unduly raised pressure is the hallmark of GLAUCOMA.
