appendix /ap·pen·dix/ (ah-pen´diks) pl. appen´dices, appendixes   [L.]
1. a supplementary, accessory, or dependent part attached to a main structure.

epiploic appendices  small peritoneum-covered tabs of fat attached in rows along the taeniae coli.
vermiform appendix  a wormlike diverticulum of the cecum.

vermiform appendix
n.
A wormlike intestinal diverticulum starting from the blind end of the cecum in the lower right-hand part of the abdomen and ending in a blind extremity.

vermiform appendix
Etymology: L, vermis + forma, form, appendix, appendage
a wormlike blunt process extending from the cecum. Its length varies from 7 to 15 cm, and its diameter is about 1 cm. Also called appendix vermiformis, cecal appendix, mesoappendix. See also appendicitis.

appendix [ah-pen´diks] (pl. appen´dices, appendixes) (L.)
1. a slender outgrowth or appendage.
2. a small appendage near the juncture of the small intestine and the large intestine (ileocecal valve). An apparently useless structure, it can be the source of a serious illness, appendicitis. Called also vermiform appendix. adj., adj appendic´eal.

Q. What Causes Acute Appendicitis? I've heard that appendicitis is a very common situation. What causes it to happen? Is there a way to avoid it?

A. Appendicitis is caused by an infection of the appendix, usually from bacterias that are already located in the abdomen. It is not a situation that can be avoided and can occur in a high prevalence in the population.
