Patient discussion about anticholesteremic.

Q. Can omega-3 make my cholesterol lower? My doctor told me that I have too much cholesterol in my blood, and that it can cause heart attack or stroke, but if I keep it low than my risk will be lower. He told me that because it’s not that high level I can try to change my diet before I have to start taking medication. I heard that omega-3 can make my cholesterol level low. Is that true? Do I have to take it in pills? Is it safe?

A. You can consume omega-3 either as pills or in fish oil, fatty fish (such as salmon) and vegetarian food such as flaxseed and flaxseed oil, canola oil, soybean oil, and nuts.

Q. Does wight loss lowers cholesterol? I'm 5'5, 175 lbs, 40 years-old man. After my doctor found that I have high LDL cholesterol, I was advised to try to lower my weight in order to reduce my cholesterol levels. Otherwise I'll have to start taking medications. Can it really do something? As far as I know, cholesterol level are pretty much a genetic thing, and one can be very thin but still have high cholesterol levels.

A. Your doctor isn't totally wrong. Cholesterol levels, as many other things are influenced both by genetic and non-genetic (e.g. diet, physical exercise) factors. Changing your life style (mainly changing your diet and starting regular daily exercise) can lower your cholesterol level, and if it's not too high to save you from the need to take meds, at least currently.

Your genetics does influence your cholesterol, but it's not a pre-determined thing.

Q. Are there any herbal plants to lower bad cholesterol? I want some advice. My son has high bad cholesterol. I am not comfortable in giving him meds but keen in knowing about herbal meds. Are there any herbal plants to lower bad cholesterol? I want some advice.

A. You can also give him the waxy grains of lecithin to be found at a good health food store. You can add this to his oatmeal or place in unsweetened, organic applesauce. Taking it even further and good for you too, try having 3 tablespoons or ground organic flaxseeds in your oatmeal every day! It will add essential fatty acids to your diet and help to keep your colon clean. You can grind the seeds in a coffe grinder! Keep the flax seeds in the freezer or fridge to preserve its goodness
