A thin film of transparent material, usually a metallic fluoride (e.g. magnesium fluoride), deposited on the surface of a lens which increases transmission and reduces surface reflection. Abbreviated: AR coating. Syn. anti-reflection film. See coating; Fresnel's formula; ghost image; coated lens.

Nearly 100 percent of light can travel through one of Rubner's nanocoated glass surfaces, whereas 97 to 98 percent passes through currently available anti-reflection coatings and only 92 percent passes through untreated glass, he says.
