This powder contains a family of colored compounds, anthrones and anthraquinones, that provide purgative and antibacterial properties. Nealson has found that the pigments, known as anthraquinones, have the same basic structure as erythromycin and similar antibiotics produced by more familiar bacteria, even though Photorhabdus is in an unrelated family not known to produce such antibiotics. |
