The branch of medicine that deals with the care of women during pregnancy, childbirth, and the recuperative period following delivery.

obstetrics (obstet´riks),
n the branch of medicine concerned with pregnancy and childbirth, including the study of the physiologic and pathologic function of the female reproductive tract and the care of the mother and fetus throughout pregnancy, childbirth, and the immediate postpartum period.

obstetrics
classically in human medicine the branch of medical science dealing with pregnancy, labor and the puerperium. In the veterinary context it is usually limited to the care of the dam and the unborn young during a parturition that cannot be completed, or has slowed to the point that the life of one or both patients is at risk.

A vaccine-based strategy would be particularly suited for use in the developing world, where maternal immunization with tetanus toxoid is a safe and valuable part of routine antenatal care (40).
Two-thirds of African women receive some antenatal care, but only 10 percent get preventative treatment for malaria and only 1 percent of HIV-positive mothers get the treatment necessary to prevent transmission of the disease to their newborns.
The development of an item number to improve access to antenatal care for women living in rural and remote areas is welcome, but asking health practitioners to provide care that is outside their scope of practice and that they are not competent to perform cannot be considered an improvement in health services.
