aminolevulinic acid /ami·no·lev·u·lin·ic ac·id/ (ALA) (-lev″u-lin´ik) δ-aminolevulinic acid; an intermediate in the synthesis of heme; blood and urinary levels are increased in lead poisoning, and urinary levels are increased in some porphyrias. DUSA's patents cover the use of
compounds such as aminolevulinic acid (ALA) with PDT to treat actinic
keratosis, basal cell carcinoma, acne and other dermatological
conditions. (R) (NASDAQ NMS:DUSA) announced today it
has filed lawsuits against physicians in California, Florida, and
Tennessee to prevent their continued use of versions of its Levulan(R)
brand of aminolevulinic acid HCl (ALA) produced by compounding
pharmacies, for use in the company's patented photodynamic therapy
(PDT) treatment for actinic keratosis, basal cell carcinoma, acne and
other dermatological conditions. The ALAD gene codes for the enzyme [delta]-aminolevulinic acid
dehydratase (ALAD), which catalyzes the second step of heme synthesis
involving the condensation of two molecules of aminolevulinic acid (ALA)
to form porphobilinogen. |
