aminoacylation a two stage process whereby amino acids are 'activated' in order to be incorporated into proteins; energy in the form of ATP is required and one of a family of 20 aminoacyl-tRNA synthetases, one specific for each amino acid, links the carboxyl group of the amino acid to either the 2'- or 3'-hydroxyl group of the ribose unit at the 3'-end of tRNA.
