genitalia /gen·i·ta·lia/ (jen″ĭ-tāl´e-ah) [L.] the reproductive organs. ambiguous genitalia genital organs with characteristics typical of both male and female, as seen in hermaphroditism and some types of pseudohermaphroditism. external genitalia the reproductive organs external to the body, including pudendum, clitoris, and female urethra in the female, and scrotum, penis, and male urethra in the male. indifferent genitalia the reproductive organs of the embryo prior to the establishment of definitive sex. internal genitalia the reproductive organs within the body, including ovaries, uterine tubes, uterus, and vagina in the female, and testes, epididymides, ductus deferentes, seminal vesicles, ejaculatory ducts, prostate, and bulbourethral glands in the male. ambiguous genitalia Etymology: L, ambigere, to go around genitals that are not normal and morphologically typical of either sex, as occurs in pseudohermaphroditism. ambiguous genitalia Endocrinology♂ or ♀ external genitalia that are undifferentiated, indistinct or discordant with the genotype. attempts to turn into the opposite sex by manner of dress or through
medical procedures--are a caregiving challenge for various social and
medical issues, The same goes for intersexed persons--individuals born
with ambiguous genitalia who don't always concretely fall into the
traditional male or female genders. Females with this condition have ambiguous genitalia and
fail to develop secondary sexual characteristics. The term applies to people born with ambiguous genitalia or to
those who don't identify with their physical sex. |
