Alstonia a genus of the Apocynaceae family of creepers and shrubs, many of them toxic. Includes A. scolaris (cheesewood, milky pine). Alstonia constricta contains the indole alkaloids alstonine, alstonidine and reserpine and causes hyperesthesia, tetany and convulsions. Called also quinine tree, bitter bark.
