Albert's disease

Etymology: Eduard Albert, Austrian surgeon, 1841-1900

an inflammation of the bursa that lies between the Achilles tendon and the calcaneus. It is most frequently caused by injury but may also result from the wearing of poorly fitted shoes, increased strain on the tendon, or rheumatoid arthritis. Treatment includes an intrabursal injection of corticosteroid with lidocaine hydrochloride and warm compresses. If treatment is delayed, the inflammation may cause erosion of the calcaneus. Also called anterior Achilles bursitis.
