a genus of venomous pit vipers. A. contortrix is the copperhead, and A. piscivorus is the cottonmouth. See also snakebite.

In order to more fully characterize winter body temperatures of reptiles and evaluate the possibilities of winter thermoregulation and hibernaculum selection, we studied over-wintering body temperatures of free-ranging Cottonmouth snakes, Agkistrodon piscivorus (Lacepede).
In the northern part of their geographic range, the Arkansas and Missouri Agkistrodon piscivorus show an elevated resting metabolic rate at low temperatures.
These formulae are to "improve the liver and kidney" (Herba Epimedii, Radix Achyranthis bidentatae, Radix Dipsaci, Rhizoma Polygonati, Cornu Cervi degelatinatum, Radix Gentianae macrophyllae, Agkistrodon acutus, at 15 g each; Caulis Spatholobi, Semen Coicis, at 30 g each; Radix Aconiti praeparata, T.
