ACASAsymptomatic Carotid Atherosclerosis Study. A trial evaluating the 5-year risk of fatal and non-fatal stroke-primary outcome in patients with asymptomatic but severe carotid atherosclerosis.
Conclusion The aggregate risk over 5 years for ipsilateral stroke and perioperative stroke or death was ± 5% for surgical patients, 11% for medical patients—i.e., a 53% aggregate risk reduction; the intervention group had a 55% relative risk reduction, with 5% primary outcome in surgerised patients and 11% in medically managed patients compared to non-treated patients.
