Adrenocorticosteroids Compounds created by the adrenal cortex that have distant metabolic effects. There are three types of compounds created by the adrenal cortex: glucocorticoids, mineralocorticoids, and androgens. Of these, the glucocorticoids are most important to the visual system due to their antiinflammatory effects. The antiinflammatory effect is thought to be mediated by inhibition of prostaglandin synthesis. See antiinflammatory drug; steroid. Want to thank TFD for its existence?
