adenovirus /ad·e·no·vi·rus/ (ad´ĕ-no-vi″rus) any virus belonging to the family Adenoviridae.adenovi´ral
mammalian adenoviruses  Mastadenovirus.

ad·e·no·vi·rus (dn--vrs)
n.
Any of the viruses of the family Adenoviridae. Also called adenoidal-pharyngeal-conjunctival virus.

Adenovirus
One type of virus that can cause upper respiratory tract infections.

adenovirus
[ad′ənōvī′rəs]
Etymology: Gk, aden + L, virus, poison
any one of the 49 medium-sized viruses of the Adenoviridae family, pathogenic to humans, that cause conjunctivitis, upper respiratory tract infection, cystitis, or GI infection. After the acute and symptomatic period of illness, the virus may persist in a latent stage in the tonsils, adenoids, and other lymphoid tissue. Compare rhinovirus. adenoviral, adj.

adenovirus [ad´ĕ-no-vi″rus]
any of a large group of viruses causing disease of the upper respiratory tract and conjunctiva, and also present in latent infections in normal persons; many induce malignancy in certain species. Along with many rhinovirus subspecies and the picornaviruses, adenoviruses are among the causes of the common cold. adj., adj adenovi´ral.

adenovirus
a member of the family adenoviridae.

avian adenovirus types 1-11
cause respiratory or enteric disease, aplastic anemia, atrophy of bursa of Fabricius, egg-drop syndrome.
bovine adenovirus types 1-9
cause conjunctivitis, pneumonia, diarrhea, pneumoenteritis.
canine adenovirus type 1 (CAV-1)
causes infectious canine hepatitis.
canine adenovirus type 2 (CAV-2)
is a cause of kennel cough (tracheobronchitis).
equine adenovirus type 1
causes pneumonia, the most severe form being primary, severe combined immunodeficiency disease of Arab foals.
equine adenovirus type 2
associated with enteric infections.
ovine adenovirus types 1-5
cause mild respiratory and enteric diseases.
porcine adenovirus types 1-4
cause respiratory disease; type 4 causes diarrhea and/or meningitis.
turkey adenovirus
causes respiratory or enteric disease, marble spleen disease.

adenovirus
A DNA virus, composed of over 40 serotypes. Many serotypes cause ocular infection, including epidemic keratoconjunctivitis caused by serotypes 8, 19 and 37. Other infections include follicular conjunctivitis with or without pseudomembranes and epithelial keratitis. The adenovirus can be identified using, among others, conjunctival swabs for viral antigen. See acute conjunctivitis.

adenovirus
Any of a family of > 40 icosahedral–20-sided nonenveloped DNA viruses with a 36 kb genome, which has 'early' genes that encode regulatory proteins, and 'late' genes that encode structural proteins Gene therapy Adenovirus is '…particularly attractive as a vector (for gene therapy), as it can produce large amounts of highly purified recombinant virus, which efficiently infects differentiated cells'; the virus is engineered to ensure that it remains in the desired location by replacing the early genes with the genes of interest–eg, CFTR–cystic fibrosis transmembrane conductance regulator gene Virology Adenovirus can cause common cold, noninfluenzal acute respiratory disease, pneumonia, epidemic keratoconjunctivitis, acute febrile pharyngitis, acute hemorrhagic cystitis Diagnosis Indirect methods–antibodies; direct methods–adenovirus antigens by immune–antigen-antibody reactions; viral culture is too time-consuming to be practical. See EIA.

Jim Peters Palomar Pomerado Health Escondido, CA Editor's note: We did not clearly state this, but the stomach symptoms in Flu Box #7 refers to viral gastroenteritis, which, according to the CDC, is often called the '"stomach flu" or "intestinal flu" although it is not caused by the influenza viruses but is, instead, caused by a variety of viruses, including rotaviruses, noroviruses, adenoviruses, type 40 or 41, sapoviruses, and astroviruses (www.
This edition includes material on several recently described viruses, including human metapneumovirus, West Nile virus, bocaviruses, and newer influenza viruses and adenoviruses, plus a broadened focus on papillomaviruses and polyomaviruses.
Adenoviruses have been used before but at the risk of damaging vital organs.
