Sales for the chemicals segment were essentially unchanged from last year with improvements in electronic chemicals and additional sales from the recently acquired acylation derivatives business offsetting lower custom manufacturing and aniline sales.
Acquisitions -- In December 1997, the company acquired Clariant Corporations acylation derivatives business and the chemical mechanical planarization assets for semiconductor production from Baikowski Chimie and from Moyco Technologies, Inc.
