First, we sought to pilot-test a new instrument that measures independence in activities of daily living, the Smith's Activity of Daily Living Independence Survey (hereafter Smith's), which is in the early stages of development and is being designed specifically for use with people with low vision.
Significant predictors of progression from MCI to dementia in both men and women in a less rigorous, univariate analysis included the apoE4 genotype, hypertension, diabetes, age, a low level of education, low intelligence, subclinical depression, stroke, social isolation, and difficulty with at least one activity of daily living.
Broadly consistent with the above findings, Marshall, Fairbanks, Tekin, Vinters, and Cummings (2006) found significant positive correlations between AD pathology in several brain regions and scores on an activity of daily living scale as completed by collaterals of individuals with AD.
