A drug highly active against the herpes simplex virus which causes cold sores and genital herpes and against the closely similar varicella-zoster virus which causes CHICKENPOX and SHINGLES. Early treatment with the drug, taken by mouth, can greatly reduce the severity of shingles. Brand names are Zovirax and Soothelip,

acyclovir, aciclovir

a synthetic analog of guanosine which selectively interferes with viral DNA synthesis. Used parenterally and topically as an antiviral agent in herpesvirus infections in cats, birds and horse.
