The perspective based on generalities and essentials rather than specifics; abstract thought parses a situation into parts, isolates them, and makes symbolic projections. Common to many psychiatric disorders is an inability to adopt an abstract attitude or shift readily from the concrete to the abstract and back as required by circumstances.
