a muscular layer in the superficial fascia of most quadripedal mammals; it includes the cutaneous trunci.

panniculus reflex
a quick twitch of the subcutaneous muscle along the back in response to a pinprick in the thoracolumbar area. Absence of the reflex is important in helping to localize the location of a lesion in the spinal cord.
